City of Souls (Soul Court Ascension #1) by Mel Harding-Shaw: Chapter Review

  City of Souls

Bounty hunter Hel’s life depends on staying below the radar and passing as human. But when the infuriating Lord of the City of Souls discovers her hidden power is the key to solving his problems, he reclaims her bond-debt and drags her into the spotlight. He’ll protect her secrets on one condition: that she does everything he asks.

Winged necromancer Bastion would do anything to save the city he rules from the strange magic menacing their world. Even blackmail the angry, intriguing bounty hunter who despises him. As the rulers of the elemental courts converge to face the threat, he’s not sure who hates him more—them or Hel. The only way to keep her close is to make her pretend she’s his.

With dark magic tearing at the fabric of reality and betrayal lurking behind every corner, Hel and Bastion’s fake relationship becomes the only thing either of them can rely on. But Bastion’s past might just come back to kill him.

And Hel’s might kill them all.

City of Souls is book one of the Soul Court Ascension trilogy—a steamy enemies to lovers Paranormal Romance with a side of Urban Fantasy.

No way that she went into that hive thinking that no spider is going to come up on her…

All I know is if that happens I may or may not throw my iPad.. and I would blame that one you Mel…

Good lord this book is something else. The way that it grasped me from the beginning and made me immediately fall in love with our badass FMC Hel, to be honest with you, at this point we don’t really know what she is yet..

But what we do know is that she has some sort of ability to but she is able to suppress it unlike the others around her. She can use it to her abilities but it is also a point of weakness for her..

It’ll be very interesting to see how that builds…

But when Hel stumbles across Bast… boy the way that the sparks fly when they are standing there HAS TO MEAN SOMETHING..!!!

Like I’m not even kidding at this point… I don’t understand what it is but it is obviously something to note!

Also the whole black plague thing is obviously her father looking for her, but who is her father and why is she running away from him? This leads me to believe that she is actually something really important to the world that mended and it keep it’s peace..

I’m really excited to see where this goes…

Page 47

Okay but for real tho.. Bast can get it. What is Hel hiding from him and why the fuck doesn’t Ryker keep his mouth shut?!

Page 57

All right, so it’s obvious at this point that I am in love with hel, she is so bad ass lol.

I also can’t believe the way that she just left Bast like that, I literally died.

But also the fact that he is able to tell what she is afraid of, and what she is hiding leads me to believe that his gift is more than just what he says it is. If that makes sense…

I also think that Hel’s gift is some thing similar to his as well. That must be why their gifts or their magic talk whenever they are close together. I don’t know but some thing about her father screams that this is super important and the way that they are already forming a relationship and we’re only on chapter 4 is absolutely good. It leaves a lot of room for the characters to build not only together, but just in general.

Chapter 5:

Okay okay okay… I see you Hel…

God she is such a bad ass. I feel like I don’t say that enough. BECAUSE HOLY SHIT SHE IS!!!

Also the fact that Bast bought her debt back makes me believe that he knows a lot more than he is leading on, also I wonder what Ryker knows that he “unknowingly” told Bast.

Yeah okay Ryker you just went down a shit town in my book because you ratted and gave weaknesses bro! Such a dick move bro!!

Okay but let’s also hit on the fact that she talks about not ever knowing her own skin and the human skin that she is in she’s stuck in.. okay so like what is she?! Is she a soul or like is she also what Bast is but like the leader of it?

Tell me why I think her dad is like the prince of hell if not like the demon god or something?! And she’s just like my bad I’ve been tryna hide for months yo but your bitch ass wanted to play games and make me sign this bogus ass contract to say I’m yours.

LIKE BOY IF YOU DON’T GET OUTTA HERE WITH YOUR WEIRD ASS!!

UGH I LOVE BAST. 😍

Chapter 6:

Okay very obvious at this point that Bast is obsessed with her, but my question is..

Is it because he knows shes very powerful

Or

Is it because he feels this attraction to her soul

Chapter 7:

BASTION QUIT IT!!! PANTIES ARE GETTING WET. LITERALLY THIS MAN IS FINEEEEEE

I can’t even I don’t even understand how Hel can even ignore him, because whatever she has going on must be fucking huge not to notice that fine ass man in front of her.

It also she is like so fucking bad ass she’s like cool I might feel something for you but instead of noticing it I’m going to bury that shit TO THE DEPTHS OF HELL!

Lol this book is absolutely wild. I really like it a lot.

I am still really banking on finding out more about her father and her abilities. I mean does Bastion’s mark even do anything if she is already technically a superior being to him… unless she isn’t..

UGH FUCK A DUCK!

This shit is so confusing so sooo good. I absolutely love it.

Chapter 8:

UGHHHH BASTION. STOP BEING SO GOD DAMN HOT.

Fuck. Like the fact that there was some silver spark between them when they kiss is OBVIOUSLY something but what that something is… I don’t know.

Honestly this is sending me for a loop. Also can I just mention how much I fucking hate Tyson.

Ruler of the fire court my ass, Tyson is the type of person that deserves a swift kick to the balls and then maybe the throat.. depending on how grateful I’m feeling.

Obviously whatever Bast is feeling Hel must be feeling it as well because the way that he talks about her makes me believe that they are mates or something.

Obviously their souls might be mated and recognizing each other but why.. it leads me to believe that Bast might not originally be from the Fire court but somewhere else entirely.

Also the fact that one of her dads portals opened up and she didn’t notice it is a little scary, who is to say it wasn’t her father that came through.. not one of the hounds…!

Speaking of which, WHO TF is her father?!

Ughhhh

Obviously in this chapter we get to see the tension and frustration that Bastion is going through about his feelings for Hel, his mind obviously doesn’t want her but he can’t hide the attraction his body has to her.

It’s an interesting concept and I am ALL HERE FOR IT BABBYYY

Chapter 9:

Hoeeeee. If you think you aren’t going to fuck him that is absolutely bonkers.

I mean I would’ve fucked him like the first night…

But that’s besides the point! LOL

This chapter was sooo good! I loved the way that it incorporated Bast’s care for the city by showing he does listen to each of the leaders but he is still the lord.

But also let’s take a moment to pause and note the people that we just got introduced to.

Morrigan: an elemental with intricately braided hair and dappled azure and deep grey wings - Captain of the Scouts

Zee: a copper-signed elemental with a septum piercing and bright purple pixie cut - Head Magical Engineer

Niko: the human spokesperson

Ryker: we already know my guy

Anyway obviously all of these people are going to be important but in what way will be interesting to find out!

I love the way that Hel embraced her inner bad ass and was like fuck it Bastion you wanna play games and then like mouth fucks the shit out of him 💀😂

Chapter 10 & 11

Okay so you’re telling me that the Archivist actually knows what’s going on?! Okay that is absolutely honkers but would make sense on why they dropped off their hand when Hel put the bracelet on him.

Honestly this book is TOO good! I love the development of Hel, she is obviously starting to open up a lot more and I think soon her and Bast are gonna finally connect 🤪

Also the Air queen is obviously hiding something, but what we don’t know yet.. I think she has a connection to Hel’s father and that’s who she is going to call

Chapter 12

God do I love Bast. Okay but honestly wtf is up with Nerida?

Do I believe that she killed the old fire lord… no I truly think his brother Tyson and the other girl that he is talking to did it. And now I also believe that the girl that Hel saw in the garden is tipping off the Archivist

Chapter 13:

Alright, let's be honest with ourselves why don't we...

This book is literally everything. I can't even with the way that Bast and Her are obviously mates and it took Her this long to realize... Like seriously queen?

Either way I am still living for this book and I totally think that they are going to fuck soon.. or something hella bad is going to happen.. Hopefully both :)

Chapter 14:

God, at this point, I don't even know who to believe... FUCK. Who killed Bast's father.. It think it was Ty and Aliya honestly.. Maybe just even Ty also the fact that he tried to poison Bast with phoenix blood is the wildest thing I can even image... DEATH TO THEM ALL!!

Chapter 15:

Okay my question is who the fuck pinged her watch.. I really do believe that Tyson is involved in some way shape or form.. It is just so weird to find out that Ryker never told her that Bast literally deleted all of her debt..

I do understand the reason he didn't tell her and ALSO OMFG THE FACT THAT SHE SAID NO AND THE HOUNDS JUST SUBMITTED WAS FUCKING WILD!!

I do think that it was her father that came through that portal that was made though.. I think that he knows that he finally found her, but what I don't understand is why Ana would send her out without Bast or someone being there to help her.. I think that is a little odd.. But we will see what happens!!

I can't believe I am almost done with this book. FUCK IT IS SO GOOD

Chapter 16:

OMFG I FUCKING KNEW IT

I am so fucking pissed off right now.. I swear to god I KNEW IT AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE TKING HIM AWAY FROM HIS CITY SO HE WON'T BE ABLE TO HEAL..

I AM LITERALLY AT A LOST FOR WORDS RIGHT NOW...

FUCK

FUCK

FUCK!!

I think that they always had this planned honestly they must have been the ones to alert her father that she was there and they were like fuck it let's take out two birds with one stone.

Chapter 17:

I truly feel like I don't have any words for this chapter other than: OMFG WHAT THE FUCK.

This chapter was absolutely fucking wild!! How the hell did she portal like that? UGH THIS MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT SHE IS LIKE THE DAUGHTER OF THE REAPER OR SOMETHING FUCK THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING I CAN'T EVEN.

Chapter 18:

okay this just got a whole lot more complicated! SHIT I already know that her dad is going to find her when they do this and I can't wait to see who her father is :)

Chapter 19:

OF FUCKING COURSE THEY WERE NEVER ON BAST'S SIDE WHAT THE FUCK.

ALSO WAIT FUCKING TIR IS HIS COUSIN I'M SO CONFUSED RIGHT NOW OMFG

Chapter 20:

OMFG

OMFG

OMFG

OMFG

Chapter 21:

OMFG WHAT THE FUCK WHO THE FUCK IS THE VANGUARD OMFG I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT FUCKING NOW!!!
